Professional Development Opportunity (Writing) Sept 2012 – April 2013
Hand in Glove

Having been selected as one of twelve artists in the South West to take part in Hand in Glove’s Platform 2012 I was then awarded a professional development opportunity. This involves writing under the guidance of my mentor, David Trigg. The six-month position includes reviewing art exhibitions (links provided below) and creating a text to accompany an exhibition by another of the twelve artists in early 2013. The long-term goal is to refine my art-writing and have at least one review published by a national arts periodical.

Primarily responsible for writing press-releases and other promotional blurbs for the group, a collaborative of six recent graduates of Fine Art, based in Bristol with recent shows in London, Oxford and Birmingham. As the group’s blogger I seek out on-line content relevant to the concerns of the group –mainly digital culture and the crossover of on-line and off-line worlds. I also maintain the group’s Twitter account, posting links to articles of interest and maintaining a web-presence during periods when the group’s artists are working on individual projects.

Experience

Writer July 2012
a-n magazine

After posting my personal studio blog on the Degrees Unedited site (see blogging experience, below), I was invited to write an ‘Is Blogging for you?’ piece for potential new users. The article is available on their website.

Editorial Assistant February 2012 – April 2012
Site Unseen | Exhibition Catalogue

Site Unseen is an exhibition featuring 40 Fine Art graduates from Bath school of AD. As well as being one of the exhibiting artists I was responsible for collating, proof-reading, and (where necessary or requested) editing personal statements of all forty students, translating into third person. Catalogue available on request.

Blogging

Bath School Blogger March 2012 – July 2012
Bath School of Art and Design

I was awarded the inaugural blogger bursary to create and maintain the student blog for the art school. My initial duties were to establish a layout and context for the blog and thereafter to build an audience through posting daily images, interviews with staff and students, and linking to other social media.

Degrees Unedited January 2012 – May 2012
a-n magazine

In the run-up to my degree show I posted a weekly blog which covered all aspects of Fine Art practice – from putting on exhibitions to writing a personal statement. I learned how to write to a deadline and to keep posts short and to the point, with a fine balance of information and humour, in order to retain my core readership.
